HL-24 House of Light

House of Light showcases how precision craftsmanship and considered construction can transform a tightly constrained Melbourne site into a calm, light-filled home. From the street, the residence presents as a fortress of hand-laid masonry. Built from 26,000 handmade Spanish bricks, the façade celebrates materiality and craftsmanship, each brick individually selected and blended across three tones to create a textured, woven-like surface that shifts with the light. The irregular lengths and hand-finished edges add depth and detail, enriching the streetscape. A slim vertical opening, carved through the masonry, reveals tiered hanging gardens and the sculptural form beyond. Below ground, the home’s wellness retreat brings together natural materials and technical precision. A limestone-clad sanctuary housing a meditation room, infrared sauna, and fernery bathed in filtered daylight. Wellness and restoration sit at the core of the build, not as an afterthought, but as its foundation.
